45th Porsche Tennis Grand Prix – Summary Day 2

German wins in the qualifying finals and dream first round matches

Stuttgart. Awaiting visitors to the 45th Porsche Tennis Grand Prix are spectacular matches right away in the first round after the draw was made on Sunday by amongst others Petra Kvitova, the 2019 Stuttgart winner from the Czech Republic. In her opening encounter, the Porsche Brand Ambassador Angelique Kerber will be up against Anett Kontaveit. The world No. 6 from Estonia was the runner-up in the 2019 final in the Porsche Arena. Petra Kvitova handed herself a no less daunting task by drawing her countrywoman Karolina Pliskova, the 2018 winner and one of toughest possible opponents. The high-class contests in the first round underline the excellence of the field at the long-standing Stuttgart tournament once again this year.

After wins in the final round of qualifying, Germans Nastasja Schunk and Eva Lys have both reached the main draw. The Porsche Talent Team players now have the chance to take on the world’s best. Nastasja Schunk defeated Elina Avanesyan comfortably 6-4, 6-1 in one of the qualifying finals and is now set to play Elena Rybakina who is making her second Porsche Tennis Grand Prix appearance. The Kazakh reached the quarterfinals of last year’s French Open. After overcoming Kathinka von Deichmann (Liechtenstein) 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday, Eva Lys will face Viktorija Golubic (Switzerland) at her main draw debut at a WTA Tour tournament.

Two other German players are in the main draw after being given a wildcard. Local hero Laura Siegemund, the 2017 winner, will meet Tamara Zidansek (Slovenia) in her opening match. Jule Niemeier from the Porsche Talent Team will play Bianca Andreescu (Canada), the 2019 US Open winner, who is making her comeback on the WTA Tour after a long lay-off and numerous setbacks. Emma Raducanu, the Porsche Brand Ambassador and 2021 US Open winner, is competing for the very first time at a WTA Tour clay court tournament. The world No. 12 from Great Britain will meet the qualifier Storm Sanders (Australia).

Three Top 10 players will be in action on Monday in the day’s second doubles match. Playing at her first ever Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, the Spaniard Paula Badosa (No. 3) will pair up with Aryna Sabalenka (No. 4) against the Tunisian Ons Jabeur (No. 9) and her Australian partner Ellen Perez. The first doubles is scheduled for the Porsche Arena at 3.00 pm and will be followed by two singles from 5.00 pm. First Shuai Zhang (China) will go head-to-head with Ekaterina Alexandrova and then Liudmila Samsonova will take on the Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet – followed then by the doubles featuring the top stars.
